What Is a Herniated/Slipped Disc?
A herniated disc (also called slipped disc or ruptured disc) happens when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes out through a crack in the tougher outer layer.
This can press on nearby nerves and cause pain, numbness, or weakness. Herniated discs most often occur in the lower back (lumbar spine) or neck (cervical spine).
Symptoms of Herniated Disc
- Back or neck pain
- Pain spreading to arms or legs (sciatica in lower back cases)
- Numbness or tingling in arms, hands, legs, or feet
- Muscle weakness
- Pain that worsens when bending, lifting, coughing, or sneezing
Causes of Herniated Disc
- Aging – Discs lose water and flexibility over time
- Injury – Sudden strain, heavy lifting, or accidents
- Repetitive stress – Continuous bending, twisting, or sitting
- Genetics – Family history of disc problems
- Overweight – Extra body weight puts stress on discs
Who Is at Risk?
You may have a higher chance of herniated disc if you:
- Are between 30–50 years old
- Do heavy physical work or lift weights often
- Sit for long hours
- Smoke or have weak lifestyle habits
- Have a family history of disc problems
Diagnosis
Doctors may recommend
- Physical examination – Checking reflexes, strength, and nerve function
- X-rays – To rule out bone problems
- MRI or CT scans – To confirm disc herniation and nerve compression
Treatment for Herniated/Slipped Disc
- Medicines – Pain relievers, muscle relaxants, and anti-inflammatory drugs
- Physiotherapy – Exercises to strengthen back muscles and improve flexibility
- Lifestyle changes – Posture correction, weight control, and avoiding heavy lifting
- Injections – To reduce pain and inflammation in some cases
- Injections – To reduce pain and inflammation in some cases
- Surgery – Needed if pain is severe, persistent, or nerves are badly pressed. Common surgeries include discectomy or spinal fusion.
